Portraits of women with unexplained health complaints

25th of May

Beatrixtheater  Utrecht (The Netherlands)

This exhibition is a collection of moving portraits of women with a common factor: unexplained health problems.

The photographer behind this impressive exhibition is Minke Groenewoud-Beerda, a Dutch photographer who also struggles with chronic conditions, including 5 autoimmune diseases.
Minke is grateful that she was able to portray the women for this exhibition, because she knows from her own experience what it is like to get nowhere after a long search for a diagnosis for her health problems.  Only after 25 years was she diagnosed with endometriosis: in Belgium.
Her personal experience and therefore knowing what these women feel and her passion for photography have led to the creation of this unique but certainly moving exhibition.
Minke wants to touch people and give the message: awareness that medical healthcare should focus more on women.  Until now, this has always been based on the man. While every cell between man and woman is different. Of all unexplained health complaints, 80% are women.  Medication tested on men can even have a toxic effect on women.
Minke: "It is terrible that in 2024 we in the Netherlands still know so little about the female body. There is a large knowledge gap. It is not a women's problem, but a social problem. It also concerns partners, (grand)children and employers of women."
The Voices for Women Foundation is organizing National Women's Health Day in Utrecht on May 25th, 2024, during which this exhibition will also be shown.
This foundation is committed to the interests of women with unexplained health complaints and strives for personalized medical healthcare.
The purpose of the Recognition exhibition is to draw attention to these often misunderstood conditions and to share the stories of these women.  Many women will recognize this and hopefully realize: I am not the only one!

Minke Groenewoud-Beerda is an all-round photographer with a preference for portraits.  Her work has now gained international fame and last year she received her: LRPS (Great Britain), QPSA (United States) and recently her EFIAP (worldwide) and k-BMK (candidate Dutch Master title).  She also exhibited in the Netherlands during the Photo Biennale Wieringen 2022.

The exhibition will convey a powerful message and showcase the stories of these women. We cordially invite you to view the photo exhibition 'Recognition' and be touched by the beautiful portraits and the sometimes poignant stories that lie behind these women.

* Recognition ©®️ is a name that was coined by the photographer herself, Minke Groenewoud-Beerda
